In 2008, I started a free weekly live comedy show called Big Terrific with my friends Gabe Liedman and Jenny Slate in Brooklyn. The only guiding principle behind it was that we wanted the audience to feel like they were at a party, and we only wanted to book the comedians we selfishly wanted to watch ourselves.
Six years later it is still happening. It happens every Wednesday night in Brooklyn at Cameo Gallery, and I host it whenever I am in New York, which is most of the time. Jenny and Gabe may have moved to LA but we are still best friends and host it together when we're all in one place: we've done it in Portland and Los Angeles, and this past January we brought it to San Francisco SketchFest.
The show is still free, and we usually announce lineups just a few hours before on Twitter. But it is always funny, a mix of new people you don't know yet but will soon along with well-known drop-ins: comics like Aziz Ansari, John Mulaney, Hannibal Burress, Zach Galifianakis and Mike Birbiglia often pop in unannounced to work on new material. Chris Rock once came by on Thanksgiving eve to do a surprise set, but there was no show. Oh well.
